Maria’s Song

Beka was honored with a song created by a South African woman named Maria Malatjie from Xigalo, Limpopo. Although they had never met, Maria’s mother often told her stories about Beka’s strength through her health struggles and about Beka’s good heart and good deeds. When Maria faced her own serious health challenges, she looked up to Beka as a critical role model. Maria created this song so that more people would know about her idol.

The lyrics describe Beka as a warrior of the Tsonga tribe. She helps the Grannies to play soccer and alleviate diseases, builds houses for the poor, and walks distances sometimes through dangerous areas to comfort people. Beka helps the vulnerable people on the earth and for that we salute Mama Beka. Long live, Mama Beka!
